VRYHEID – Government officials in KwaZulu-Natal have urged Vryheid locals not to drink tap water.
Residents have been told to only consume bottled water after scores of people were hospitalised for diarrhoea.
The Provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs has sent a team of engineers and infrastructure specialists to look into the matter.
The district municipality is under administration following irregularities, including failure to guarantee that the water is safe for human consumption.
KZN Governance and Traditional Affairs spokesperson, Lennox Mabaso, says the ongoing problem has been happening for the past three days and the department has responded to the matter with urgency.
“We have assembled a team to investigate if the issue might be a waterborne outbreak,” Mabaso said.
In South Africa, one company is tapping into an alternative source for drinking water to solve the growing challenge of water shortage and contamination by harvesting water from the moisture in the air.
